Jack grew up in Berlin, New Hampshire, the youngest of four children (his siblings are not named in the novel). His father, Mark Torrance, worked at a paper mill and was an abusive alcoholic who brutally bashed Jack's mother with a cane. Jack's own drinking nearly ended his marriage to Wendy after he broke his son Danny's arm in a blind rage. He quit drinking after a drunk driving crash where he and a friend ran over an abandoned bicycle and realized they could have killed a child. Jack accepted a winter caretaker position at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to salvage his family, re-establish his career, and finish a promising play. The hotel is haunted by ghosts of those who died violently within it and hosts a being that wishes to coerce Jack into killing Danny to harness the boy's 'shining' and break free of the building.

In Their Own Story

Jack encounters ghosts of previous hotel staff who insist he has always worked there and must kill his family. He succumbs to supernatural forces, starts drinking again, and grows to hate his wife and child. He cuts off radio communications and sabotages the hotel snowmobile, their only means of transportation. He tries to kill Wendy, who knocks him out and locks him in a food storage room. The ghost of the previous caretaker, who murdered his own family before committing suicide, helps Jack escape. Jack then brutally attacks Wendy with a roque mallet, though she escapes. He is interrupted by the arrival of Dick Hallorann, whom he almost beats to death. Jack confronts Danny and is about to kill him when his son reaches through the hotel's power and brings out Jack's true self. Jack tells Danny to run and remember how much he loves him, before the hotel's power forces Jack to bash in his own face with the mallet. Jack forgot to dump the boiler, which grows too hot and causes the hotel to explode. Jack is killed, but Danny, Wendy, and Hallorann escape in time. In the sequel Doctor Sleep (2013), Danny learns Jack is also the biological father of Lucy Stone, conceived during a brief sexual encounter with student teacher Sandy Reynolds shortly before Jack was fired. Jack's ghost later intervenes to help Dan's friend Billy Freeman, Lucy, and Abra Stone defeat Rose the Hat and the True Knot at the site where the Overlook once stood. After the battle, Jack and Dan make peace with each other.

Jack Torrance originates as a writer, former teacher, and debate team coach whose alcoholism and temper cost him his teaching position at Stovington Preparatory School after he assaulted student George Hatfield for vandalizing his car. His key appearance is in The Shining (1977), though his legacy haunts the sequel Doctor Sleep through his grandson Abra Stone. In the 1980 film, Jack is portrayed less sympathetically by Jack Nicholson: he kills Hallorann with an axe, chases Danny through a hedge maze, and freezes to death while Wendy and Danny escape. The film ends with a photograph from July 4, 1921 showing a man who strongly resembled Jack. In the 1997 miniseries, author Stephen King created a more sympathetic Jack who sacrifices himself by causing the boiler to explode to destroy the hotel. The miniseries ends with Danny's high school graduation as his spectral father looks on. In the 2019 film Doctor Sleep, Henry Thomas portrays Jack in flashback sequences, and his likeness is taken by The Bartender and the Hotel Caretaker at the Overlook for interactions with adult Danny. An opera based on the novel, approved by King, portrays Jack similarly to the novel, with Brian Mulligan playing the role. As of 2025, a planned West End play directed by Ivo van Hove and written by Simon Stephens has no confirmed casting.
